The Royal Palace of Naples is one of four residences used by the royal house of Bourbon during the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies; the other three are the palace of Capodimonte, the palace of Caserta and the palace of Portici. Of considerable size, the palace majestically overlooks Piazza del Plebiscito and is surrounded by other important buildings such as the Salerno Palace, the Basilica of St. Francis of Paola and the Prefecture Palace. Throughout its history, the palace has been the residence first of Spanish viceroys, then of Austrian viceroys, and later of the kings of the House of Bourbon.
Finally, after the Unification of Italy it became the Neapolitan residence of the kings of the House of Savoy.
